Es ist 23 Uhr Samstag Abend, wir sind irgendwo zwischen Studio recording´s und dem Weg zur nächsten Nacht Veranstaltung. Wir sind schon am Ende unseres BronxBerlinConnection (diesmal auch mit Freunden aus Hengelo) – Berlin Aufenthaltes und ich komme tatsächlich zum zweiten Mal dazu mich hinzusetzen um einen Blog Eintrag zu verfassen. Und jetzt wo ich darüber nachdenke wie ich wohl die Vergangenen 5-7 Tage und all das was in ihnen passiert ist schildern soll merke ich, dass ich da überhaupt keine Lust zu habe. Die Tausend Bilder die wir bereits einfangen konnten werden am Ende am eindrucksvollsten dokumentieren was die Gruppen und deren Leute in dieser wunderbaren Woche alles erlebt haben. Das bloße Auflisten von den Aktivitäten, den kulturellen und sub-kulturellen, den bewegenden Gesprächen nach dem Besuch im KZ Sachsenhausen, die Begeisterung in die unsere Leute aus Berlin, New York und Hengelo Zuschauer versetzten wann immer sie auf irgendwelche Bühnen gesprungen sind, den Freundschaften die in dieser intensiven Zeit längst geschlossen ein Leben lang und über Ozeane hinweg halten werden, den Fragen und verwunderten Reaktionen beim Entdecken von anderen kulturellen Gebräuchen.....die tausenden von kleinen Dingen die alle Menschen die bei der Umsetzung der BronxBerlinConnection beteiligt waren und sind in schiere Begeisterung setzen können nicht in Auflistungen oder Berichten wieder gegeben werden und insofern werde ich es auch gar nicht versuchen.
Seit 2008 gibt es die BronxBerlinConnection. Im kommenden Jahr geht (hoffentlich) die 5te Jugendgruppe aus Berlin auf die Reise nach NYC (die Vorbereitungsphase darauf beginnt noch diesen Sommer) und während ich diese Zeilen schreibe befindet sich die nunmehr dritte Jugendgruppe aus NYC in Berlin. Informationen über das Projekt gibt es reichlich online. Zudem gibt es einen Dokumentar Film der auf CD erhältlich ist und online auf YouTube zum Abruf bereit steht.
Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Jugendaustausch Projekten ist die BronxBerlinConnection darauf ausgerichtet Jugendliche zu involvieren die von herkömmlichen Angebotsstrukturen nicht erreicht werden und genau das tut sie auch. Natürlich nicht ausschließlich denn in diesem Projekt sollen Lebenswelten aufeinander prallen, und genau das tun sie auch. Im Laufe der BronxBerlin Austausche haben wir viel erlebt, wurden wegen rauchenden „Unbekannten“ auf dem Flieger nach NYC fast notgelandet, hatten Rangeleien in Harlem , wir haben gestritten, gelacht und mit Hautausschlag in der Notaufnahme des Krankenhauses in Brooklyn gesessen. Nicht alles war lustig, nicht alles war schön doch insg. war alles einfach hervorragend. Jeder Einzelne der bisher involviert war bleibt wie ein Familienangehöriger und mit der nötigen Unterstützung hoffen wir das unsere Familie noch viel mehr wachsen kann denn wer hätte schon gedacht das ich mir mal 2000 Kinder wünsche.
Als involvierte Sozialarbeiter von beiden Seiten des Atlantiks sehen wir unsere Aufgabe darin Zugänge zu schaffen. Zugänge die „unseren“ jungen Menschen weitestgehend vorenthalten bleiben. Austausch Projekte gehören auf der Liste dieser ganz nach oben. Die BronxBerlinConnection konzentriert sich auf die Lebenswelten der jeweilig gegenüber stehenden Jugendlichen und diese sind oft roh, trist, manchmal traurig oder gar gefährlich. Jedoch nie so wie von den Medien beschrieben und die Jugendlichen können ihre eigenen Schlussfolgerungen ziehen wenn sie lernen, dass viele Menschen scheinbar Angst haben spät Nachts in die South Bronx zu fahren während die Menschen in der South Bronx Angst vor der Polizei haben die „draußen warten“. Sie können selbst Urteil darüber fällen warum sich junge Teilnehmer aus NYC „in Deutschland zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben „richtig sicher fühlen“ oder warum eine Rückkehr in ein Schulsystem welches viele von Ihnen einst verließen für einen Jugendlichen im Berliner Wedding heute so schwer ist (im Gegensatz zu dem Amerikanischen System).
Letztendlich sind es sie die unser Projekt durch ihr Talent, ihren Wissensdurst und ihre Energie erfolgreich machen und dabei entstehen „Werke“ und „Erfahrungen“ die Türen öffnen und für viele ein erster Schritt in „eine neue Welt“ ist, die es aus neuer Perspektive zu erobern gilt.
Die „BronxBerlinConnection in Berlin 2013“ ist vorbei. Die Bilder die zeitnah veröffentlicht werden sprechen für sich. Die Jugendlichen aus Holland machen sich heute auf den Weg nachhause, die NY´er fliegen Morgen ab und die Berliner bleiben hier. Alle kehren in „ihre Welten“ zurück....mit neuen Freundschaften, Erfahrungen und Plänen sich gegenseitig und unabhängig vom Projekt erneut zu besuchen.
Die BronxBerlinConnection soll weiter gehen und auf den Erfahrungen der letzten 5 Jahre basierend neue Wege gehen. Zusammen mit dem Street College, einer alternativen Bildungsplattform von Gangway e.V. die jungen Menschen das anbieten soll was sie im „herkömmlichen Bildungsangebot“ nicht finden konnten, wollen wir Bildung und Zugang zu dieser in den Fokus setzen. Derzeit planen wir, zusammen mit Partnern in NYC, ein „Global Ambassadors“ Programm das Jugendliche von beiden Seiten potentiell zu „Praktika´s“ für längere Zeit in die jeweils andere Stadt schicken kann. Dabei sind wir auf Unterstützung angewiesen und leider ist die benötigte Hilfe wie so oft in erster Linie finanzieller Natur. Wir brauchen Partner die an das Projekt glauben. Partner aus der Politik, der Wirtschaft, Stiftungen und der Kultur. Menschen die uns finanziell, logistisch und/oder als Dozenten unterstützen.
Und wenn sie diese Zeilen lesen sollten und sich wundern wer das wohl sein könnte dann sollten sie sich angesprochen fühlen.
Wie einer der Jugendlichen aus der diesjährigen Gruppe zu sagen pflegt wenn er die Bühne verlässt......
We are „The BronxBerlinConnection“ and we are signing off.........
Die BronxBerlinConnection wurde durch die Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend ermöglicht.
It´s something like 11 pm and we are somewhere between studio recording sessions and making our way to the next night event. We have already come to the tail end of the BronxBerlinConnection 2013 – Berlin stay (this time with friends from Hengelo-Netherlands) and this is actually the second time i find a moment to sit down and write a blog entry. And now that i find myself thinking about how to sum up the last 5-7 days and everything that has happened i realize that i don´t feel like doing that. The many pictures we were able to take throughout will document what the groups and its young participants have experienced throughout this exciting time. To simply list the activities, the moving conversations we had after visiting the Concentration Camp „Sachsenhausen“, the crowds they were able to excite every time they got on stage, the friendships that developed in this intense time period and which will last beyond oceans and distances for a life time, the questions and puzzled expressions while discovering other cultural „rituals“..........the many „little things“ which excite those who have and who continue to implement the „BronxBerlinConnection“, those things can´t simply be listed and thus i am not going to try.
The BronxBerlinConnection has been around since 2008. Next year (hopefully) the 5th delegation from Berlin will head to NYC (preparation will begin this summer) and as i am writing this the 3rd group from NYC is in Berlin. Plenty of information about the project can be found online. As well, there is a documentary available on CD as well as via YouTube.
Contrary to many existing youth exchange programs the BronxBerlinConnection is specifically focussed on engaging young people who are not being reached by „traditional“ programming, and that is precisely what it does. Not exclusively because part of the idea is to „let worlds collide“ within this project, and that is exactly what happens. We have had a lot of special moments throughout the implementation of the „BronxBerlinConnection“, almost experienced an emergency landing when „strangers on board“ smoked in the bathroom, we had „internal disagreements“ in Harlem, we have fought, we laughed and we sat with allergic reactions in the emergency room of Brooklyn hospitals. Not all of it was funny, not everything was pretty but all of it was great. Every single person involved so far has remained like family and we hope to find the necessary support in order to grow this family for some time to come because who would ever have thought that i´d be wishing for „2000 kids“ one day.
As Social Workers involved from both sides of the Atlantic we believe that our biggest challenge remains in „securing access“ for „our“ young people. Access to things that are often denied to our constituency. Exchange programs belong at the very top of that „list of things“. The BronxBerlinConnection focusses on the living conditions of participants from the partner city and these are often harsh, sometimes sad or even dangerous. But never quite like the media portrays them and young people reach their own conclusions when they learn that many people „seem to be afraid to go to the South Bronx late at night“ while many people in the South Bronx seem to be afraid of the police “waiting outside”. They can judge for themselves why many young people from NYC feel safe „for the first time“ while in Berlin or why the it is so very difficult for young people from Berlin, Wedding to reenter the school system after having once dropped out as opposed to the NYC side where a GED is enough to get you into a Community College,
At the end of the day it is them, their talent, thirst for knowledge and their energy who make this project successful and in the process they produce works of art and experiences that open doors and are a first step into „a new world“ which can now be conquered from a new perspective.
„The BronxBerlinConnection 2013 in Berlin“ is over. The pictures which will soon be published speak for themselves. The Dutch youths are about to be on their way home, the NYC group leaves tomorrow and the Berlin youths remain......with new experiences, friendships and plans to visit each other again, outside and without the project.
The BronxBerlinConnection must continue and based on the last 5 years, develop further. Together with Gangway´s „Street College“, an alternative educational platform, offering young people that which they were unable to find within the traditional educational system, we will focus on education and access to such as the central piece of the project. Together with partners in NYC we are currently developing a „Global Ambassadors“ program that will be able to send selected young people from both cities across the ocean for internships and extended stays. For this we depend on support and like so many other times this support is mostly financial in nature. We need partners who believe in this project. partners from the Political and Corporate sectors, Foundations and Cultural institutions. People willing to support us financially, logistically and/or as teachers.
