It´s official, the BronxBerlinConnection NYC Tour 2011 is over....

Ach man, jedes Mal nehme ich mir vor einen sachlichen, professionellen Blog zu schreiben und dann kommen mir die Gefühle dazwischen.


Die Gruppe sitzt nun seit 4 Stunden im Flugzeug auf dem Weg nachhause, ich bin noch in NYC wo ich die nächsten 2 Tage mtg´s abhalten werde und was ich vor 24 Stunden noch für unmöglich gehalten hätte ist nun Fakt. Ich vermisse die alle......

Nach der vollgepackten Woche ging es am Wochenende etwas langsamer und entspannter zu. 

Samstag hatten wir einen writing Workshop mit MC-Kswift. Dann etwas Freizeit und Abends gingen wir alle zusammen zu einer Beatbox Benfits Veranstaltung bei der "4Xsample crew" (die mit unserer Gruppe reisten) als Feature das House derbe rockten. Danach gabs dann sogar noch Beatbox freestylen vom Feinsten in Manhattan auf der Straße mit 4xSample crew und keinem Geringeren als Beatbox Legende Kenny Mohammad (wenn euch der Begriff nichts sagt bitte mal eben googeln).

Oh man, everytime I promise myself that this time I would write a professional, straight to the point sort of blog and than my feeling get in the way.

The group has been sitting in the plane on their way home for over 4 hrs now. I remain in NYC where i´ll be conducting meetings for the next few days and what I would have sworn to be impossible less than 24 hrs ago is now in fact true. I miss those guys.

After a crazy and busy week the weekend was a bit slower and more relaxed. On Saturday we attended a writing workshop with MC-Kswift. After that we had a few hrs off. In the eve we went to a Beatbox fundraising event where “4xSample Crew” as featured guest straight up brought the house down. Afterwards they even got into a Boatbox jam session right outside of the club in the middle of Manhattan with “4xSample Crew” and none other than “Kenny Mohammad” (if you don´t know that name you might want to hit up google asap).

 

Sonntag haben wir ein bischen ausgeschlafen und sind dann zur Scratch Academy gegangen um da, mit DJ Esquire (Brooklyn) an insg. 20 decks das Scratchen zu Üben. Am Ende gab es sogar einen battle zwischen den Teilnehmern mit Preisen. Direkt von da ging es ab zum Time Square wo wir uns mit “Kid Lucky” und Emcees aus der ganzen Stadt zur alljährlichen “Subway Series” trafen. Regelmäßig treffen sich Rapper aus der ganzen Stadt um in den letzten U Bahn Wagon der jeweilig ausgesuchten Züge zu springen um dort eine “Cypher “ zu veranstalten. In diesem Jahr wies selbst die NY Times darauf hin das Leute die keinen Hip Hop mögen vieleicht an diesem Nachmittag nicht hinten im 7 Train sitzen sollten. Wir sprangen also in den benannten 7 Train wo bis zu unserer Ankunft in Queens mächtig gerockt wurde. In dem kleinen I Phone Trailer hier könnt ihr euch das ein bischen angucken.

Sunday we slept in. Afterwards we went to the Scratch Academy where we learned how to Scratch in a DJ workshop with DJ Esquire (Brooklyn) on some 20 decks. Right after that we moved on to Time Square to meet up with Kid Lucky and Emcees from all over NY to get into the subway series which takes place regularly. On this day even the NY Times let folks know that "if they don´t like Hip Hop", they may not want to sit in the back of the 7 Train to Queens on this particular afternoon. After rocking Time Square we all jumped on the 7 rain where the party didn´t stop until we got to Queens. In this little I Phone trailer you can watch some of the footage.

Ja, und gestern gab es tagsüber Freizeit um am letzten Tag noch zu shoppen, Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besuchen etc. Abends gab es noch ein kurzes Treffen mit unseren Freunden vom Hip Hop Education Center (NYU) und eine letzte Cypher beim Open Mic in der Bar 13 (Manhattan) mit Illspokin…….so und jetzt sitze ich hier. Niemanden der irgendwas von mir will, keiner der irgendwelche Sprüche reisst….Es ist aufeinmal so leise…….

Well, and yesterday was a day off for everyone to take care of last minute shopping, sight seeing etc. In the eve. we held a short mtg with our friends from the Hip Hop Education Center (NYU). After that, one last Open Mic at Bar 13 (Manhattan) with Illspokin…..and now I am sitting here. Noone nagging me for stuff, noone cracking wise jokes……..Everything is so quiet all of a sudden.

An die Gruppe aus NYC. Danke das ihr immer gekommen seid, euch um unsere Leute gekümmert habt und mit uns gerockt habt. Man, ihr seit so talentiert und dope…..Wir werden euch sehr vermissen.

To the German group. You guys did a great job. Everyone who has seen your performances or met you has been moved. NYC just isn´t the same without you.

To the group from NYC. Thanks for coming every day, taking care of our people, for rocking the stage with us….You guys are so talented and dope. We will truly miss you.

BronxBerlinConnection 2011, still on and poppin....

Okay, nun sitze ich hier im Stadium Red Studio, Harlem, die Gruppe macht gerade einen Recording Workshop mit legendary Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Just Blaze ist auch hier, ja ich weiss....ich komm gleich noch mal drauf zurück.

Zuerst noch mal ein paar Tage zurück um da wieder anzufangen wo wir aufgehört haben.....

Also, den Mittwoch könnte ich problemlos schon jetzt als Highlight des Trips, zumindest für mich, bezeichnen. Nach dem Frühstück brachen wir auf um die Einrichtung United Bronx Parents zu besuchen. Die Leiterin, Lorraine Montenegro gab uns eine Einführung in die Entstehungsgeschichte. Das bedeutete eine Zeitreise zurück in die 60´er Jahre in denen es in der South Bronx keine gar keine sozialen Leistungen gab. Immer wieder war die Rede, damals wie heute, vom großen Thema Gentrifizierung (das ja auch in Berlin eine heißes Thema ist) welches man überall beobachten kann. Wir hörten von Lorraine´s Großmutter, der „Hell lady der Bronx“ die damals, nachdem sie von der Stadt keinen Termin bekam um über die schlimmen Umstände in der South Bronx zu reden, einen Lieferwagen mietete den sie prompt mit Müll auflud um diesen vor dem Bürger Amt abzuliefern. Als sie wieder zuhause ankam hatte sie einen Termin.

Die Einrichtung begann klein und beinhaltet heute 7 Häuser (6 davon gehören UBP) mit einem jährlichen Budget von fast 10 Millionen $. Die Programme beinhalten alles , von der Arbeit mit drogenabhängigen Müttern samt ihrer Kinder über die Arbeit mit drogenabhängigen Senioren die gleichzeitig HIV positiv sind bis zu einer Kindertagesstätte, Obdachloseneinrichtungen und einer Klinik. Wir sind immer noch überwältigt von Frau Montenegro die uns von der Arbeit mit „ihren Leuten“ erzählte, wie sie sich nicht vertreiben lassen und zusammen halten. Wow, so manche in Berlin könnten sich hier eine Scheibe abschneiden. Lorraine Montenegro ist überigens die Mutter von unserem Freund, scratch that, unserem BronxBerlin Familienmitglied Joe Conzo.

Danach ging es zurück Richtung Downtown, nach Brooklyn zu einem weiteren BronxBerlin Familienmitglied, Mark Naisson aka „The Notorious Phd“ und seiner ach so netten Ehefrau die uns bei sich zuhause zum Essen einluden (und man hat das geschmeckt). Danach hatte die Gruppe mal endlich ein paar Momente für sich und der Tag war durch.

Den Donnerstag begannen wir mit einem Besuch des Hip Hop Education Centers in der NYU (die im Übrigen dafür gesorgt haben, dass wir auf dem NYU Gelände untergekommen sind) um über die bildende Arbeit mit und durch Hip Hop Kultur zu reden. Ein Gespräch, dass ich demnächst gerne auch mal in D-Land führen würde.

Danach gings weiter nach Harlem zum Essen in Doug E Fresh´s Chicken and Waffle House. Doug E Fresh, die Legende und einer von insg. drei Vätern vom Beatboxen. Ein paar Anrufe später und unsere Gruppe durfte sich freuen, als Doug E dann auch tatsächlich reinkam, ein paar Gespräche mit uns führte, Photos mit uns schoss. Doug E, thank you man!!!!

Nach Chicken and Waffe  (Soul Food vom feinsten) ging es weiter zur Harlem Stage wo die BronxBerlinConnection als eine von insg. zwei Features auftrat. Die talentierten Poeten (alle zwischen 15-20 Jahren alt) aus allen umliegenden NY boroughs, klingen mir jetzt noch in den Ohren und ich kann nicht aufhören darüber nachzudenken wie solch junge Menschen solch schwere Themen transportieren. Was müssen sie alles gesehen haben? Danke für einen event den keiner von uns so schnell vergessen wird Urban Word.

Und nun ist es schon Freitag, Ende der ersten Woche und es ist kaum fassbar wie schnell die Zeit fliegt.

Wie bereits gesagt schreibe ich diese Zeilen im legendären Stadium Red Studio, umgeben von Platin Records und Bildern von den Stars die hier aufgenommen haben. Von Biggie Smalls und Puffy bis Jay Z und alles was dazwischen liegt. Sadat X hat gerade eine recording session gemacht und redete anschließlich lange mit unserer Gruppe die sich aus unseren Berlinern und einer Gruppe Jugendlicher aus NY zusammen setzte (Urban Word). Was wir nicht erwartet hättten war, dass er sich im Anschluß die Zeit nehmen würde "unseren" Jugendlichen beim Aufnehmen zuzuschauen. Vieleicht sollte ich noch erwähnen, dass jeder anwesende Jugendliche und Künstler die Zeit hatte 8 Bars aufzunehmen. Und zwar mit dem Mic auf dem Jay Z z.T. das Black Album aufnahm. Zu guter letzt haben einige es auch noch geschafft ein Autogram von Just Blaze auf ihre Turnschuhe zu bekommen. What a crazy day!

Und mehr kommt später, ich verspreche es.

Okay, so I am sitting here at the legendary Red Stadium Studio in Harlem, the group is doing a recording workshop with legendary Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Just Blaze is also here,  yeah.....I know but I’ll get back to that in just a little while.

Let me go back to a few days ago first so we can pick up where we left off.

So Wednesday is easily the highlight of the entire stay here so far, at least for me. After breakfast we went to visit the organization „Bronx United Parents”. The director, Mrs. Lorraine Montenegro gave us a introduction into to the history of the organization and just how it came to be. That meant a trip back in time, to the 60´s, a time when funding for programs in the Bronx was scarce, to say the least. Time and again we were talking about gentrification, which remains a topic of discussion then and now. Also, something one can observe all over Berlin. We heard about Lorraine’s Grandmother „The Hell Lady of the Bronx“ and how she, after the city wouldn’t give her an appointment to talk about the miserable circumstances in the Bronx, rented a truck which she loaded up with garbage which she then drove down to the federal bld. to drop it in front of it. By the time she got home she had an appointment.

The organization began small. Today it includes 7 buildings (of which it owns 6) with an annual budget of some 10 Million $. The services offered include pretty much everything from working with drug addicted mothers and their children, drug addicted seniors who are also HIV positive, a day care center, homeless shelter and a clinic. We are still completely overwhelmed by Mrs. Montenegro and how she told us about her work with „her people“ and how they are fighting back, how they are not leaving, no matter what. Wow, some people in Berlin could learn a lot from this experience, no doubt. By the way, Mrs. Montenegro is the mother of our friend, scratch that, BronxBerlin fam. members Joe Conzo.

After this is we were off back towards downtown, to visit another BronxBerlin family member, Dr. Mark Naison aka „The Notorious PhD“ and his beautiful wife who invited the entire group to their house for dinner (and it tasted oh soooo good). After that the group finally had some time to themselves and the day was done.

Thursday we began with a visit to the NYU Hip Hop Education Center (who hooked us up with awesome accommodations at NYU by the way) in order to talk about the educational value and the incredible work being conducted utilizing Hip Hop Culture when dealing with often marginalized young  people. A conversation i would love to have in Germany one of these days.

Afterwards we were off to Harlem for some fine Soul Food at Doug E Fresh’s Chicken and Waffle House. A few phonecalls later (Joe Conzo, once again you are mos def da man) and Doug E Fresh surprised everyone by walking in to talk and take pics with our group. Doug E, Thanks man!

Then we moved on to the Harlem Stage where our entire group performed as one out of two features. I can still hear the incredibly talented young poets from all 5 boroughs (all between 15 and 20 years old) and I can’t help but wonder how such young people can tell such sad, deep stories. What their young eyes must have seen? Thanks for an event none of us will forget anytime soon Urban Word.

And now it is Friday already and it is hard to believe just how fast the time is going by.

As is have mentioned previously. I am writing these words at the legendary Stadium Red Studio in Harlem, surrounded by platinum records of all the heavy hitters who have recorded here, from Biggie Smalls to P Diddy to Jay Z. Sadat X just finished a recording session after the conclusion of which he sat down to talk to our group at length. The group was made up of our Berlin youths and artists as well as a number of youths from NY. I should mention that every one of them had the opportuntiy to record 8 Bars. On the Mic with which Jay Z once recorded parts of the Black Album. At the end some of the youths even managed to get Just Blaze to sign their sneakers. What a crazy day!

Die BronxBerlinConnection ist mos def on and poppin.....

Aus Gründen der nicht vorhandenen Zeit werde ich mich kurz fassen und für alle diejenigen die mit diesem Projekt noch nicht wirklich vertraut sind einen ausführlichen Bericht nachliefern, nachdem Die Gruppe NYC verlassen hat.

Nun ist es schon fast Mittwoch und man mag es kaum fassen das wir schon seit Sonntag hier sind.

Montag ging es gleich los und wir sind seitdem nicht zur Ruhe gekommen. Am Morgen ging es ab nach Ellis Island und zur Freiheitsstatue (dank der Ferien mit 3 stündiger Wartezeit). Danach zur Fordham University (Bronx), für die erste Performance (und die Gruppe hat mos def die Bühne gerockt). Danach ging es weiter zur Bar 13,Manhattan zur Freestyle Session mit Illspokin.

Heute ging es nach einer kurzen Nacht, zurück zur Fordham University, wo wir dem Unterricht von Prof. Mark Naison und seinen Schülern beiwohnten. Im Unterricht diskutierten wir über Hip Hop Kultur und Bildung, wir freestylten, tanzten und hatten eine super Zeit zusammen. Danach ging es weiter in die South Bronx zur Performance mit Urban Art Beats, eine wirklich tolle Sache und eine Hammer Einrichtung in einer Gegend und mit Kindern und Jugendlichen die diese Einrichtung dringend brauchen. Danach ging es gleich wieder zurück nach Manhattan zur Performance mit dem Goethe Institut und dem Deutschen Konsulat. Ein voll gepackter Raum mit geladenen Gästen die fett mit uns gefeiert haben.

Ich würde mich gerne bei ein paar sehr wichtigen Leuten bedanken.

Da BronxBerlin fam

Because of the nonexistent time i am going to have to keep it short but i promise to follow up with a detailed report right after the group has left NYC.

It´s almost Wednesday and it´s hard to beliefe that we have been here since Sunday.

Things got cacking right away on Monday  and we just haven’t stopped since. First we headed to Ellis Island and the Statute of Liberty (thanks to vacation with a 3 hr wait). After that we were off to Fordham University for the first performance (and the group mos def burned down the stage). After that it was on Bar 13 (Manhattan) fort the freestyle session with IllSpokin.

After a short night we headed right back to Fordham University today, to witness Mark Naison and his class in action. We spoke about Hip Hop as the educational tool that it is, there was a freestyle session, dancing....We had a great time. After that we moved on to perform with Urban Art Beats (Bronx), a great program for children and youth in a community that needs it. After that it was time to head right back to Manhattan for the performance with the Goethe Foundation and the German Consulate. A packed room with invited guests who came to party with us.

I´d like to say thanks to some very importans people.

It´s on and cracking all over again tomorrow. I am going to try to update the blog asap. I will write a detailed pieve about the entire stay next week

Und bald ist es wieder soweit.

Am 17 April bricht eine 18 Köpfige Delegation aus Berlin nach NYC auf um dort 10 Tage lang Bühnen zu rocken, Jugendlichen zu begegnen, Programme und Einrichtungen zu besuchen.....
